Puzzling Rosy Slime on Secluded Tasmanian Beach Raises Concerns of Likely Phytoplankton Proliferation
Officials in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has materialized on a isolated coast, with some scientists anxious it could be an algae outbreak.
Extensive Presence Across Shore
The rosy-colored ooze materialized across a portion of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been documented on sections of another local beach and a separate bay.
Specimens Gathered for Examination
Examples have been collected and submitted to the regulatory body for testing. A spokesperson remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in reaction to shifts in nutrients, warmth, rainfall or light".
"The events are occasionally called reddish tides because the blooms can turn the water reddish," the official added. "Not all algae outbreaks are dangerous, with several kinds functioning as a primary source of food for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The primary reason of red tides in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce luminous nighttime effects at night."
